Fuel Delivery & Injection

Fuel Systems

Keeping a modern fuel injection system running the way it should

01Section 01

From carburetors to fuel injection

Fuel injection replaced carburetors through the 1980s and 90s, actively pumping and atomizing fuel at high pressure instead of relying on simple suction. That's why modern cars start more reliably in winter and run cleaner across the board — and also why there are more components in the fuel path that can eventually need attention.

02Section 02

Sign one — poor fuel economy

The system is designed to inject precisely the right amount of fuel for the current driving conditions. A noticeable drop in mileage often traces back here, well before any warning light shows up on the dash. If you're filling up more often for the same commute, that's the system asking to be looked at.

03Section 03

Sign two — the check engine light

A check engine light is most commonly tied to the oxygen sensor or the mass airflow sensor, both of which are part of the fuel injection system. The light doesn't tell you what's wrong on its own; a proper scan and a real diagnosis do.

An honest read before any wrench turns.

That's the whole job — and it's why our neighbors in Hyde Park keep coming back to Central Automotive.

04Section 04

Sign three — the car tries to start but doesn't fire

A car that cranks and cranks without catching is often a sign the engine isn't receiving enough fuel — the fuel pump, the injectors, or a filter somewhere along the line. It doesn't get better on its own.

05Section 05

Sign four — spitting, coughing, or stalling

When a car behaves like it's low on gas even when the tank is full, that's usually a delivery problem — too little fuel, too much fuel, or fuel delivered unevenly. It's uncomfortable to drive with and worth handling before it strands you.

06Section 06

Sign five — the car won't start at all

Turn the key to the on position and listen for an electronic hum near the fuel tank. That's the fuel pump priming up. Silence there usually points to a pump that needs replacing — a repair that's much easier to schedule than it is to handle from the side of the road.

An honest read before any wrench turns.

07Section 07

Central Automotive's diagnostic process

We handle fuel pressure testing, injector flow testing, and scanning for fuel trim codes as part of the same visit. Every component in the fuel path gets checked in a specific order so we're not chasing symptoms — we're finding the actual cause.

Done at five means done at five

Every job at Central Automotive is quoted before the wrenches come out. If we tell you it will be done at five, it will be done at five — and the number we quote is the number you pay. No mid-job phone calls tacking on parts you didn't agree to, no surprises when you come to pick the car up.

Written estimate before any work begins, on every fuel systems job.
