Belts

The belts that quietly keep everything else running

01Section 01

What they do

The serpentine belt is the long, snaking belt that drives most of the accessories on the front of the engine — the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor among them. Where applicable, a timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft rotating in sync so the engine's valves and pistons don't collide. Different belts, different consequences when they fail.

02Section 02

Warning signs

A high-pitched squealing sound on startup that goes away as the engine warms up, visible cracking or fraying along the belt's ribs, or a sudden loss of power steering, charging, or AC while driving. Any of those means the belt is asking to be looked at before it snaps in traffic.

03Section 03

Diagnostic process

A proper belt inspection is a combination of a visual wear check, a tension measurement, and an age- and mileage-based assessment against the manufacturer's replacement interval. Belts can look fine and still be due; belts can look tired and still have life. The right call comes from checking all three.

An honest read before any wrench turns.

04Section 04

Common repairs

Serpentine belt replacement is the most frequent belt job, and while we're in there we inspect the tensioner and pulleys — because a new belt on a bad tensioner won't stay new for long. Timing belt service is a bigger job on the vehicles that call for it, and it usually pairs with a water pump replacement given the labor overlap.

05Section 05

Why belt failure is worth avoiding

A snapped serpentine belt can take out the alternator, AC, and power steering all at once — a car that's suddenly not charging, has no power assist on the wheel, and no cold air, all from a twenty-dollar part that should have been replaced during a regular visit. Timing belt failure on an interference engine is worse: bent valves and a rebuild.

Central Automotive's approach

Belts get checked at every scheduled maintenance visit, and we flag them by wear and interval, not by upsell targets. If yours has another year, we'll tell you it has another year.

Done at five means done at five

Every job at Central Automotive is quoted before the wrenches come out. If we tell you it will be done at five, it will be done at five — and the number we quote is the number you pay. No mid-job phone calls tacking on parts you didn't agree to, no surprises when you come to pick the car up.

Written estimate before any work begins, on every belts job.
